Meet The Author: Melanie Nilles, The Starfire Angels Series

Melanie Nilles grew up on a western North Dakota cattle ranch and farm. Along with her interest in horses, she always had a fascination with science fiction and fantasy. She currently resides in central North Dakota with her family, which includes her husband and kids, and two cats. Her published works include the Starfire Angels series and the Legend of the White Dragon epic. The dark fantasy Tiger Born is her first book as M. A. Nilles. Besides writing, she also trains and shows her horse.

1. What’s your idea of ‘utopia’?

My idea of utopia is a place (not necessarily physical location) of peace and contentment, whether that’s in the real world or in my imagination. For me, it happens when I’m with my horse or in the zone writing.

2. Who influenced you to become a fabulous young adult paranormal author?

I wasn’t influenced by anyone. The genre chose me. I had the idea for Starfire Angels and it wanted to involve teens. That’s just the way the story wanted to go. Normally I write about adults, but that one was different. The story chose the young adult angle. It just worked better that way and was a lot of fun to write.

3. Paper or digital media?

Digital. I LOVE my Nook. I will not pick up paper books any more, except for nonfiction.

4. Do you have an “end of book” ritual (that you’re willing to share…)?

In the early years, I’d feel depressed about finishing a book and go through a grieving process, but now I’m actually relieved by it and go onto the next. There’s no ritual other than posting the links everywhere for readers to buy it and updating my website. Other than that, it’s just another work day and that means moving onto the next book after a day or two of rest.

5. What do you hope to get out of UtopYA Con 2012?

Friends and fun. It’s always fun to hear different points of view and meet new people, especially other authors and readers. I may even come away with new story ideas. You just never know. I try to keep an open mind and not carry to many expectations. That way, I always enjoy myself 🙂
