UTOPiAcon Launches a Book Club

Utopia Announcements, For the fans

fb-timeline_utopia2017bookclubWe’ve been wanting to launch book club for a few years now, but how to do it, where to do it, and how to manage it were all questions that kept delaying it. Would it be a podcast? How many books would we do, and how often? With differing opinions and no “right” answers, the UTOPiAcon Book Club sat on the back burner while more pressing demands were handled.

However, we are extremely excited to announce that the official “read-a-long”-style book club has launched as a CLOSED Facebook group (to save scrollers from spoilers in their newsfeed). Each month we will host a read-a-long of a book by an author attending the coming year’s UTOPiA convention. We will post a prompts and discussion starters on several chapters a week in one or multiple posts to encourage reading along and interaction among the fans. This should be a cakewalk for those who read at least three books a week.

At the end of the month, we will have a bit more fun and surprises with the book, from giveaways, to author drop bys, Q&As, and more.

The Book Club begins December 1, 2016. The first book we will be reading is ENCLAVE by #UTOPiA2017 keynote speaker, Ann Aguirre. ENCLAVE is the first book in the New York Times bestselling dystopian Razorland series. Aguirre will be answering questions from the Book Club members only via a Skype video on December 29th.

Book four in the series, VANGUARD, releases in July 2017, and Aguirre will be reading a sneak peek excerpt from the upcoming book LIVE at UTOPiAcon. We don’t want you to miss out on that, so we’ve decided to get you up to speed by introducing book one to those unfamiliar with the series that Publisher’s Weekly called “…for fans of The Hunger Games.”

Here is the book’s description:

In Deuce’s world, people earn the right to a name only if they survive their first fifteen years. By that point, each unnamed ‘brat’ has trained into one of three groups–Breeders, Builders, or Hunters, identifiable by the number of scars they bear on their arms. Deuce has wanted to be a Huntress for as long as she can remember.

As a Huntress, her purpose is clear—to brave the dangerous tunnels outside the enclave and bring back meat to feed the group while evading ferocious monsters known as Freaks. She’s worked toward this goal her whole life, and nothing’s going to stop her, not even a beautiful, brooding Hunter named Fade. When the mysterious boy becomes her partner, Deuce’s troubles are just beginning.

Down below, deviation from the rules is punished swiftly and harshly, and Fade doesn’t like following orders. At first she thinks he’s crazy, but as death stalks their sanctuary, and it becomes clear the elders don’t always know best, Deuce wonders if Fade might be telling the truth. Her partner confuses her; she’s never known a boy like him before, as prone to touching her gently as using his knives with feral grace.

As Deuce’s perception shifts, so does the balance in the constant battle for survival. The mindless Freaks, once considered a threat only due to their sheer numbers, show signs of cunning and strategy… but the elders refuse to heed any warnings. Despite imminent disaster, the enclave puts their faith in strictures and sacrifice instead. No matter how she tries, Deuce cannot stem the dark tide that carries her far from the only world she’s ever known.
